Abstract

Recently, Nanosatellite means “new economic growth engine” of Busan Metropolitan City, the 2nd largest city in population and the largest port-city of Korea (South). Because Korean government has decided to award about $20M contract to Busan Metropolitan City for the space industry development focused on nanosatellites for ocean application in terms of National Pilot Investment Program for Regional Balanced Development on last April. In this program, KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology), government funded research institute of Korea, takes in charge of the development of 6U nanosatellites system named as “BusanSat” (incl. Ground Segment). Planned operation missions for BusanSat are vessel tracking with S-AIS (satellite-Automatic Identification System), ocean environment observation (Harmful Algal Blooms, Oil Spill, Aerosol, etc.) with multispectral imager, and so on. Based on the joint development experience of GOCI-II (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II), multispectral ocean observation payload for Korean multi-purpose geostationary satellite named as GEO-KOMPSAT 2B and 9-year operation experience of GEO-satellite payload, GOCI -the World’s 1st Ocean Color Observation payload in GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit)-, KIOST has been operating the technical association with several regional satellite industries and universities in Busan for the successful development of BusanSat.
