Abstract
A time-series sediment trap was deployed from August 2011 to June 2012 at a depth of 4,500 m in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG). Total particle fluxes varied from 1.63 to 58.7 mg m-2day-1, with an average of 34.9 ( ± 13.6) mg m-2day-1 in spring (March to May) and 15.8 ( ± 8.52) mg m-2day-1 in the other seasons. Fluxes of biogenic and non-biogenic particles varied in phase with total particle flux. The enhanced non-biogenic material flux in spring wassynchronized with that of atmospheric dust deposition implying potential linkage between the enhanced particle flux and input of nutrients by atmospheric dust deposition. Our results show that the dust deposition in the NPSG enhances biological carbon pump efficiency. Attention needs to be paid to the response of biological carbon pump to Asian dust events and atmospheric dust deposition in the NPSG.
